UAI has been increasingly sought after by large utility customers with a substantial utility budget spread across thousands of facilities.  Some of UAI’s implemented recommendations have been very straightforward rate changes that did not involve any negotiations nor was there any gray area in interpretation of policies and applications.  UAI has developed other recommendations that required in depth research, negotiations requiring multiple meetings and correspondence, creative rate applications, citing certain policies or precedent setting cases.

Actual Utility Cost Savings Success Stories

  • UAI recommended several facilities for one client be placed on a discounted rate intended for only one other multi-site customer.  After much resistance from the utility, UAI and the client were successful in getting their large load accounts on the special alternative rate that will save over $500,000 annually and over a $400,000 refund.
  • Many times UAI has successfully worked with a utility company’s largest customer to secure concessions and benefits for our clients without harming existing relationships.  In one case UAI was able to reduce a $75 million per year customer’s expenses by $2 million per year and is now receiving more favorable treatment than ever.
  • UAI was successful in getting the largest load of one client (over 10,000 kW demand) on an alternative rate that was an option that the utility could have recommended for 10 years.  The facility now saves over $130,000 annually on the new rate.
  • UAI was able to negotiate a $200,000 per year savings for a large multi-site company’s largest facility and was the utility company’s largest customer at over 40,000 kW demand.  The customer was already on a special contract rate (non-published) approved by the public utility commission.  UAI was able to lower it further.
  • UAI has successfully implemented over $1,000,000 in annual ongoing savings implemented as a result of negotiated “customer sponsored rates” with municipalities and coops.  Most of the time these special rates have been negotiated due to UAI’s staff understanding the parameters that a utility rate design team must work within.
  • Through comparison of like facilities to one another in our system, UAI was able to find a facility that had an incorrect bill demand embedded in the monthly rate calculation occurring for at least 5 years.  A negotiated refund of over $500,000 and annual on-going rate savings over $150,000 were the result.
